22nd Annual College Fair Increases Access to Higher Education for Hundreds of Aspiring Students
On Saturday, February 23, 2019, OU Credit Union participated in the Second Ebenezer Church’s College Fair as part of the 22nd Annual College Weekend in Detroit. The event is designed to connect students from Detroit schools with colleges and trade schools in Michigan and surrounding states.
The over 900 participants who attended were able to speak with representatives from over 50 colleges and higher education institutions and interview for on-site admissions. Attendees were encouraged to bring transcripts, resumes, and letters of recommendation to increase their likelihood of admission to schools they are interested in.
Students who attended were also able to compete for scholarships, hear from special guest speakers, and ask questions about financial aid, admissions, and other facets of higher education. Since the program’s inception, over $400,000 in scholarships have been awarded and over 7,000 students have attended.
This year, the Credit Union participated by presenting two workshops on student budgeting and banking basics to prepare attendees for financial success. Additionally, the Credit Union had a table with information about our products and services and answered financial questions students had about managing their finances.
OU Credit Union recognizes the importance of financial education in opening doors for students to access higher education. The Credit Union has established a variety of resources to help educate students about personal finance, including our free Financial 4.0 app and website. Additionally, the Credit Union offers free financial seminars on campus at Oakland University that are tailored to students. Registration for these events can be found here. OU Credit Union is a proud sponsor of the 22nd Annual College Weekend event.
