Oakland University Credit Union Celebrates 82nd Anniversary by Paying it Forward with Kindness
In honor of its anniversary, the Credit Union celebrated 82 years by designating $8,200 to surprising our community with random acts of kindness throughout its anniversary week; known as Pay it Forward week.
From November 10 through November 16, Credit Union employees visited different communities to share acts of kindness and free giveaways in hopes of starting a movement of paying it forward to others. Businesses visited were large and small at a variety of different locations across mid-Michigan.
On Monday, we celebrated Veteran’s Day by delivering wish list items to the Veteran’s Home in Grand Rapids. While in the Grand Rapids area, we also paid it forward by paying for customers’ entire orders at The Sparrows Coffee & Tea & Newsstand, and passing out gas gift cards at a local Speedway. Throughout the week as the kindness continued, employees visited multiple businesses and even made gift bags with school supplies and other requested materials for teachers at Midway Early Learning Center in Holt.
As part of our Pay It Forward initiative, Affirmations in Oakland County and Relay For Life of Eaton County were both awarded $500 toward their organizations. Affirmations is a nonprofit organization serving Oakland County that provides a welcoming space where people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, and cultures can find support and unconditional acceptance, as well as where individuals can learn, grow, socialize, and feel safe. Relay For Life of Eaton County is one branch of the American Cancer’s Society signature fundraiser dedicated to helping communities attack cancer.
The Credit Union also selected a local hero, Bonnie Kalahar, to receive a special donation of $500 due to her contributions to infants and families in our community. Bonnie uses material from donated wedding dresses to create burial gowns for infants who have passed away at Sparrow’s NICU.
Additional Pay It Forward locations included Honcho Coffee in downtown Clarkston and Coffee Barrel in Holt. Employees surprised Honcho and Coffee Barrel customers by paying for their orders. In Auburn Hills, the Credit Union handed out gift cards to visiting families at AMC Movie Theater. MSUFCU employees were also able to pay it forward at the Wharton Center by surprising random Wharton Center visitors with paid event parking for the Wednesday evening performance of Les Misérables.
Other acts of kindness included providing pizza and restaurant gift cards to the Berkley Public Safety Department, wardrobe racks to the Children’s Ballet Theatre of Michigan, Oakland University students with vouchers to the OU Union Food Court, laundromat gift cards, and gift cards to Small Cakes bakery in Okemos.
Thank you to all of our members and for everyone’s support as the Credit Union celebrated its 82nd anniversary!
