September is Disaster Preparedness Month

September 3, 2020

National Preparedness Month (NPM) is recognized each September to promote family and community disaster planning. As we all continue to respond to COVID-19, there is no better time to become more organized than this September. Learn more about how to be prepared for a disaster.

Make a plan
According to ready.gov, the best way to be prepared for a possible disaster is to create a plan. First, talk to your friends and family about how you will communicate before, during, and after a disaster. Use the Centers for Disease Control’s recommendations as a guide due to the coronavirus.

Create an emergency kit
Next, put together an emergency kit. Start by gathering enough supplies to last for several days after a disaster for everyone living with you. Include unique needs each person or pet may have in case you have to evacuate quickly. You should include:
* Water (one gallon per person per day for three days, for drinking and sanitation)
* Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
* Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
* Flashlight
* First aid kit
* Extra batteries
* Manual can opener (for food)
* Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

Emergency fund can help
You should also start or add to an emergency fund. Emergencies can come with big costs like car repairs, medical bills, and home maintenance. Consumers without emergency funds are more likely to take on debt when unexpected costs occur. Studies show that having at least $500 in savings greatly increases financial stability.

Understand your risks
Another aspect of being prepared for a disaster is understanding the risks in your area and checking your insurance coverage. Learn where you can go in case you have to evacuate, the best routes to take, and how to make your home less vulnerable to common hazards, like fires or water damage. Determining this information before something happens will put you in a better position to act fast in case of an emergency.

September is a good time to create or review a disaster plan. Start today, so you’re better prepared tomorrow!
