College freshmen are rarely given the chance to get a feel for college before they attend, but this summer, 20 new Golden Grizzlies took part in Oakland University’s sixth annual Michigan GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness for Undergraduate Programs) Residential Summer Boot Camp. This camp offered students a look into college life by participating in sessions that focused on academic schools, social media etiquette, and financial education presented by OU Credit Union. They also networked with Oakland University graduates.

During the Banking Basics Session hosted by OU Credit Union, Financial Educator, Ian, provided tips for managing debt, paying for college, saving money, and budgeting. He also encouraged students to get in contact with the Financial Aid Office to help them understand their charges and what they need to know about paying tuition once school starts.

This group of students has been working with the Oakland University Pre-College Program, GEAR UP since they were in seventh grade and are about to enter their freshman year of college. This program is the state’s largest college success initiative and it provides mentoring for students from the time they start seventh grade until they enter their freshmen year of college.

“Participants gained an in-depth understanding of account management, including checking and savings accounts. Several students asked intelligent, thoughtful questions that opened an engaging discussion about appropriate use and handling of credit,” said Ian.

OU Credit Union is proud to support this program and help students learn about the financial necessities of attending college.
